Dark, earthy hues cast an enigmatic tone over the portrait of a Native American man, whose shadowed, grim expression detaches him from the viewer. The grave sobriety of the piece is thrown into some relief by the subtle explosion of feathers and halo-like light behind the figure’s head and muted reds on his clothing.
