Earthy colors meld together on the wings of a single butterfly set against a light, mottled backdrop. The inscription to the viewer’s right reads, “Albert Bierstadt / Jan 22/92.” This work was likely a gift given to one of Bierstadt’s guests, as he loved to give out favors to those who came to visit him. These butterflies in particular were favorites of guests, as each butterfly is vibrant, unique, and was made right before their eyes.
