A small group of elk wander and feed along the grassy shores of a lake. Detailed subjects—the nearest elk, tall redwoods, mossy rocks—create a clear foreground. The expansive lake and surrounding tree topped hills are hazy and vague, while the vast background feels distant from the viewer. Still Washington State’s Mount Rainier towers over the entire scene. By juxtaposing these clear, detailed frontal elements with hazy, vague background ones, the artist brilliantly captures the volcano’s enormity on a two-dimensional canvas.
