A couple walk through the shaded enclave of trees, a picture of dozy serenity against the energetic lines of the buildings beyond the square, a subtle but marked contrast from Payne’s dramatic landscapes. Many of Payne’s painted works derive from “en plein air” sketches like Breton Square.
